Interviewing for a new job can be a stressful experience for most people. Here are a few tips to lessen anxiety and ensure success!

Don’ts:

  • Don’t be late. This tells your prospective employer that time management is not your strong suit. Consequently, don’t show up an hour early either!
  • Don’t bring the entire family with you to the interview. Your 3 kids running around the lobby will tell your future employer that you don’t have reliable childcare.
  • Don’t look at your phone during the interview or take a call. It’s rude and very unprofessional!
  • Don’t overshare. Keep it on a friendly professional level.
  • Don’t have an unprofessional email address or put a questionable nickname on your application. Some things are best kept between friends!

Do’s:

  • Do dress for success! If you don’t have business attire, then be neat and clean and work with what you’ve got. If you would wear it to the club, it’s not ok for the interview!
  • Do go in with a positive, friendly attitude. Being negative is a turn off to any employer.
  • Do be honest and up front. If you were fired from your last job, or have charges on your background, don’t lie about it. This will set a bad precedent.
  • Do prepare ahead of time. Have your resume ready and any questions you may want to ask the interviewer. This will let them know that you are taking the process seriously.
  • Do make eye contact and have a good firm handshake. Yes, people still do this and don’t try to end it with a fist bump!

Remember that you only have one chance to make a first impression. Make sure that you are remembered for positive things and not that you wore bedroom slippers to the interview. Follow these tips and you will be on your way to finding a great job!
